News Reel ~ When dogs are the audience ...

This is not new news but it's important and I feel that the more people who know about these programs, the better. In Granite Falls, there is a reading program called  Reading with Rover . In this program, dog owners bring their dogs to elementary schools and libraries so the children can read to them.

This program is an initiative that is designed to encourage reluctant readers to polish their skills and build some self - confidence. "A child who may be hesitant to read aloud to his peers is typically less stressed when reading to a dog and the dog never judges the child's reading ability."

Check out the article on heraldnet.com about this program When dogs are the audience, youngsters improve reading skills

If you are interested in joining a program such as this look around in your local community or contact your local literacy council for more information.

Any ideas for setting up a program like this if one is not already in place?

Libraries in schools? Maybe a suggestion to a school board?

The dogs would have to be certified in some way, wouldn't they?

It's a brilliant idea, I have read of its' success.

I'd contact the schools and the libraries. Also get in touch with any literacy coucils in the area. Maybe work with a local St. John's Therapy Dog program. See if they can help you set it up.

You could always set it up with the library as a saturday morning program.

Most of the time the "certification" is something the group themself has developed. It generally tests whether or not the animal can accept strangers touching them, children making noise and other dogs without barking/lunging.

I think that is one smart idea. Kids, including mine, sometimes do not wish to read aloud. Maybe because they don't want to be corrected. Reading to dogs can be a starting point to encourage them to read.

What a wonderful idea, dogs are patient and I bet they would love to be read to, just talking to a dog makes them happy, so whatever helps a child I'm all for.
