DDF ~ Pics of Dogs in Cuba

I promised I'd post some pictures of dogs in Cuba. I found that while every dog I saw was intact, there weren't as many dogs around as I would have expected. Turns out that this is because the population of street dogs is "controlled". From what I was told after asking questions from various locals, when the population of street dogs gets too high the authorities "step in"

There is a picture below that may make you sad. That is your fair warning ...

Locals in Cuba do have pet dogs. They are given food chips for the dogs just as they are for themselves. We didn't take pictures of many dogs, it got to be rather depressing, but here are those we did take ...

This is the first dog we saw. She followed us through Havana for many blocks. She was thin but people obviously feed her (whether that be tourists or locals). She did have many bald spots ... I was unsure if it was mange or something else.

I have read that people honour dogs in Cuba but I found that hard to believe given the state of the street dogs there. It's not like food is rare in Cuba ... When we came upon this guy, I nearly wept ... He was not the only one in this state in the same square. There were easily ten dogs that looked the same - passed out sleeping on the concrete and thin as a rail.

Here he is from another direction ...

Yes. He was breathing. We checked.

Many dogs were in this state and since we did not want to lose control of our emotions (nor feel that we had to bring one of these pups home!) we did not take pictures of them all.

I did, however take a picture of something that you see in EVERY city ...

No matter where you go, there will always be a pile this at the corner!

so sad, and unfortunately it's a universal problem.

GSC ... it is a universal problem. Funny thing was that after Googling "Cuba Street Dogs", most of the information I found was about how they are treated wonderfully with kindness and no one ever goes hungry. Most pages I found were like that ... guess you shouldn't always believe what you read, eh?

Life with 5 Dogs ... welcome! I think he was hungry but it was so hot that day that he didn't even notice we were there.
