New Wave Dog Training?

Check this one out. I found it while wandering through the CL postings this morning!

You too can have someone else train your dog while you're on vacation! They "train dogs to overcome a variety of issues" Doesn't that sound just dandy?

What a load of dog poo.

Good grief! Here's the problem with doing this ... I expect that 6 weeks after the dog goes home it will have totally regressed. I really want to call this entire situation a magnet for asshats ... Imagine! Not training your own dog! I've had people ask me to take their dog to train it and I tell them that if they want the dog to listen to me, then I will ... but if they want the dog to listen to them, they have to do the work themselves.

I've seen this style a few times now and it's sad that people will actually use it! I know we're lazy asshats, but couldn't we at least take a wee bit of responsibility?

Yup, dogs can't overcome the big issue.
Their owners.

I'd love to be a lazy asshat and let them train my dog! But that really wouldn't help anything at all. Unbelieveable.

Wonder if they make a lot of money off this?????

Lots of "hand trained" birds are sold - and from what I've heard it works for our avain companions...but it's really incomprehensible why anyone would assume the bird would get on just anyone's finger, anytime. Much like a dog would follow any random command. Very odd.

I'd assume the bond you have with your pet would help the training process.

And when you're on VACATION of all things? Pets are most stressed out then!

Geesh, do I have to agree with you on this one....so true, so true. A neighbor of mine owns a therapy dog that she takes to school with her to help with her Special Ed students. The dog came from a local Assistance organization & was given to this woman in good faith. Trouble is, my neighbor is not (nor ever was) very responsible to her pets and does not keep up with any consistent training or discipline for the poor dog. So the dog keeps falling back into bad habits (won't heel without pulling, won't wait at the door, won't give up a toy, etc.) and she's 70 pounds of bad habits. So what does this neighbor do? Any chance she gets, she lets the organization board her dog because she knows that when she gets her dog back it will be "retrained" and on perfect behavior. Which lasts for about a week... Makes me livid.

I bet they do make money off this. There are too many lazy owners out there ...

yes, many birds are sold hand tame or handfed. I have found that it is up to the owner to continue socialization from that point on. I've met handfed birds who were biters and hand haters. I've met birds who were parent raised and not hand tame or hand trained when purchased who turned out to be wonderful companions!

Great comment about how stressed pets are when their owners are on vacation!

That's too bad! Good example of someone who would totally use this training style though! That would totally drive me crazy.

Do you have cats?
